Acting on the “Common Humanity in Us All”

Having interned last summer with his country’s mission to the UN, Hasan Jashari (Belgium, UWC South East Asia, Lehigh ’24) said that “despite the challenges we face globally, I truly believe the future is global, and closer cooperation on that level is crucial.It was clear that despite our political differences, we all saw a common form of humanity in us all that united us.”

Hasan has turned that conviction into action, both on campus and back home. He has been a teaching and research assistant for Lehigh’s International Relations Department, UN special projects manager in the Lehigh/United Nations Partnership, and president of Lehigh’s World Affairs Club. He led the club’s revival after a period of inaction, creating a series of workshops that promoted intercultural communication and understanding. The university has honored him with its Class of 1904 Award, which honors evidence of future leadership, and the Contribution to Student Life Award.

For the National Committee of UWC Belgium, Hasan served as outreach and alumni engagement coordinator and Executive Committee member. He continues to give time to its selection process, helping to review and score applications.

“Our National Committee is completely volunteer-run,” he noted. “It is because of alumni and parents giving their free time to the National Committee and the UWC mission that my life changed. I wanted to spread the UWC mission, its values and opportunities to more people across Belgium, especially young people from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.”
